Business

Business is at the heart of national growth and development, and this is reflected in the opportunities for learners in the Business department at Higham Lane School. Our main aim is to prepare students to develop crucial skills and knowledge which will allow they to access, understand and contribute in a dynamic business environment. We aim to prepare students for their working life by giving them an insight into what is involved in running a business, or working as part of an existing business by encouraging economic and business understanding.

Whatever you do in your professional life, the chances are that it will involve business. For any career, it's useful to understand the way business is run. The popularity of reality TV shows such as The Apprentice have raised the profile of the country's business success stories and provided a real insight into the ups and downs of following your business dream. We focus on teaching Business in a very practical hands-on way.

One of the important things we know is that we need to solve business problems. Each one can be described as unique, requiring its own solution. To be successful requires that people are able to analyse a situation, examine various alternatives and combine parts of solutions to solve the particular problem being faced. Our department staff will teach students to do this. Business students will learn to balance number with human values; understand big business, little business and entrepreneurship; consider the relationship between business and the community and learn how to adopt different approaches to solving business problems.

The Business Department employs three highly experienced teacher to teach a range of business and economic courses. The department is very proud of its outstanding results. Our GCSE Applied Business students achieved 99% A*-C grades in 2016 with 56% at A*-A. BTEC Business students achieved 100% A*-C. Business at Key Stage 4 is one of the most popular subject choices; it is also one of the most successful in terms of final grade outcomes for our students.

The Department is proud of:

♦ Outstanding results at Key Stage 4 ♦ Support for students via school clubs, individualised learning and AFL ♦ Ongoing improvements to Teaching and Learning and sharing of good practice, ideas and resources through regular department meetings ♦ Organised visits and close business links ♦ Regular communication with parents.
