Friends of Higham Lane School (FoHLS)

Many schools have a PTA (Parent Teachers Association) or Friends of . . . Group. They are a great way of getting to know other families and staff whilst making a real contribution to the quality of school life for all. At Higham Lane School, we have not had a PTA for number of years, and this is something we would now like to re-launch as `Friends of Higham Lane School' (FoHLS).

Whilst fund-raising will be a major part of this group's activities, and this directly contributes to further developing the School, there's a lot more to it than that. FoHLS will provide a great way to build the whole school community, including links with the wider society, all of which will benefit the School and offer a positive influence within the local community.

Here's what one member of a PTA Group said: ``I was new to the area and a bit overwhelmed with the prospect of my daughter starting school. I took the plunge by volunteering. It's been a great way of building my confidence and meeting new friends. The PTA socials are surprisingly good fun and working with other mums and dads to improve the school playground equipment is really satisfying. My advice - do it!''

FoHLS - Our mission is to support more parents to participate in education to benefit all of our children.

The former PTA organised and ran events and discos to enhance the social scene at Higham Lane School. They also raised funds for the many activities, projects and in-school clubs that are always available, supporting and encouraging the development of our young people.

Over the years, they have supported the Book Club, Maths Club, School Library, Chess Club, Textiles Club, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the development of the new Business & Enterprise Centre. They donated funds to outdoor work in the school garden, the school aviary, purchased new benches for one of the social areas, and new chairs for Coombe Hall.

The date of the next meeting will appear here in due course, starting at 6pm, in the Learning Resources Centre. Refreshments are provided. Please come along and help us make this great school even better!
