Higham Lane School

Learning Resources Centre

The Learning Resources Centre provides a welcoming and attractive environment that supports teaching and learning within Higham Lane School and actively promotes reading for enjoyment.

We house a collection of over 11,000 books to support the curriculum together with ICT facilities. Our extensive fiction section is regularly updated to ensure new fiction and new authors are available to read while reading for enjoyment is promoted through book reviews, quick-reads, booklists, quizzes, reading challenges, and our book club. The non-fiction book stock is constantly developing to reflect the needs of students and the curriculum. We also have a DVD collection and a staff library.

We open before, during and after school and are staffed by Mrs A Turner, a qualified librarian (Learning Resources Centre Manager) and Mrs L Gunn (Assistant Librarian). Students are also encouraged to assist in the running of the Centre and this activity is always popular amongst our students.

The LRC runs two daily homework clubs before and after school, from 8am-8.45am, and from 3.15pm-4.15pm (2.55pm-3.30pm on Wednesdays). LRC staff are on hand to offer help and access to resources to support the students, together with ICT facilities.

All Year 7 students receive induction sessions and learn research skills during their first year. This ensures they are able to use the LRC effectively and encourages them to continue to make best use of the resources available during their time at Higham Lane School. All Year 7 students also take part in the Accelerated Reader programme which develops reading and understanding skills.

We also hold book events, author visits, competitions and quizzes. We organise Carnegie Medal Shadowing and Warwickshire Secondary Schools Book Award, and display students' work alongside our own book displays around reading themes. Book Chat is our lively and popular reading club which is held weekly at lunchtime when all students are welcome to come and discuss their books with the group.
