Higham Lane School

Higham Lane Sixth Form opened in September 2016. We are an academic Sixth Form and offer 21 subjects, all at A-level.

Each student has sat an AS in each of their chosen A-levels except in English Language, English Literature, Government and Politics, Law, Media Studies and Physical Education. We offered these six subjects as linear two year qualifications. We offer the full suite of facilitating subjects.

Our entry profile required students to obtain at least 5 or more A*-C (9-4) grades with Bs/6s in the subjects that they wished to study at A-level. Chemistry and Physics needed a B/6 in Mathematics, and this was a recommendation for Computer Science. We offered resits in GCSE English Language and Mathematics for students who achieved a D/3 grade in either subject.

The subjects introduced at A-level that are not offered at GCSE are Computer Science, Economics, Government and Politics, Law, Media Studies and Psychology.

Students were encouraged to take 4 subjects if they attained high grades at GCSE. We did find as a consequence of the demands of the reformed A-levels and advice from University Admissions Tutors that the majority of students whittled their four choices down to three. The students had two mocks before Summer 2018 and this has given us further reassurance about our A -level predictions. Regular assessments and quality assurance have also contributed to our confidence in making predicted grades.

We use ALPs, SISRA and the DfE Level 3 Value Added Ready Reckoner to help us track progress. Our most recent ALPs AS-level report from the results in August show that we are a grade 5 which aligns us with the national average. Two thirds of our entries achieved or exceeded their minimum expected grade which is set at the upper quartile of national performance of students with the same starting point (based upon GCSE average points score). Note that only 15 subjects sat the AS qualification.

Higham Lane School has been selected to be part of the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP), delivered by ThinkHigher in Coventry and Warwickshire. Areas were selected where the HE participation of young people is both low and much lower than expected based on GCSE-level attainment. Therefore the project aims to work closely with students to raise aspiration and increase progression to further and higher education.

We offer many opportunities with links with HE and businesses and this includes the creation of a Student Union. The Union organise charity events, celebrate diversity and offer a range of subject and wider societies.
