CPSHE Education

The personal and social development of our students is very important to us at Higham Lane School. We challenge every student to strive for the highest standards, not only academically, but also in their personal and social development.

In our Citizenship, Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education lesson, our students are provided with many opportunities to develop essential skills, knowledge and understanding, and to address attitudes and values, all of which are necessary to help students make sense of their life experiences and feel confident and informed now and in the future.

Our objectives are such that each student is encouraged:

  • To develop self-esteem, confidence, independence and responsibility and to make the most of their abilities;
  • To play an active role as future citizens and members of society;
  • To develop a healthy lifestyle and keep themselves and others safe;
  • To develop effective and fulfilling relationships and learn to respect the difference between people.

All students follow a course in CPSHEE delivered by teaching staff and specialists and there are many other opportunities where students are able to develop and practise their personal and social skills. These include:

  • Informal times - before and after school, breaks, lunchtimes, cafeteria choice and tuck shop;
  • During assemblies;
  • Being aware of the decision making processes through Student Voice;
  • Curriculum Enrichment opportunities, theme days, outside speakers;
  • Prefectship, Anti-bullying Initiative Counsellors, Form Captains, helping on reception duty;
  • Extra-curricular activities like the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and sports clubs.

We are committed to Citizenship and Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education because we know that the way students feel about themselves can have a significant impact upon their achievement, and by engaging our students in learning vital life skills we will equip them for their future away from Higham Lane School.

Year 7 Autumn Term Programme

Growth Mindset: This is a block of work, created by Steph Gibbs, to help our students with resilience, independent learning and reaching their potential. It focuses on practical scenarios that the students need to work through in order to progress with their learning. It should assist teachers with teaching to the top and adding challenge to everyday lessons.

Parliament & Government: During this block of work Year 7 will be looking at how Parliament works, the difference between Parliament & Government, what MPs and Peers do, how laws are made and the Suffragettes.

Friendship: This lesson focuses on the way to be a good friend. It touches on issues such as the qualities of a good friend, making and keeping friends, empathy, fall outs/differences of opinion and bullying.

British Values: This work explores what ‘Being British’ means and how Britain has evolved its tolerance, equality and shared values over time.

Year 7 Spring Term Programme

Careers: It is never too early to start discussing potential career opportunities with your son/daughter. During this block of work we will look into what skills and qualities your child has and how these may link to possible career opportunities or jobs they may like. They will also look at planning for the future, which will include looking at options from Year 8 onwards and their suitability to them.

Protective Behaviours: This is a block of work, directed to our Year 7 students, based on students knowing how to keep safe from potential exploitation scenarios. 

There are two themes that we will look into in depth:

  1. We all have the right to feel safe all the time.
  2. We can talk with someone about anything, even if it feels awful or small.

It covers work on using the right language, feelings and emotions, behaviours linked to emotions, rights and responsibilities of the child, feeling safe and unsafe in certain situations including possible abusive situations, when a secret is a good and bad thing and  creating a network of trusted people. 

Year 7 Summer Term Programme

Fire: A presentation hosted by the Fire Officer.

Sun Safety: Recognising that keeping themselves safe is the sun is a priority for our students.

E Safety: Following on with work in IT, this e safety lesson focuses on staying safe online, cyber bullying and signposting students on where to go if they encounter any poor behaviour online.

First Aid: This work focuses on how to look after friends and family with the most recognised of medical conditions, to include asthma & diabetes.  It teaches students how to put patients into the recovery position and how calling for help is a priority.

Road Safety Talk: Conducted by Sam Hemus from WCC, the talk is based around the child’s safety coming to and from school. Cycle safety and pedestrian safety.

Prejudice & Discrimination:

Year 8 Autumn Term Programme

Real Love Rocks: This is a programme that the charity Barnado’s have put together for schools. It focuses on positive relationships, the dangers of poor relationships, grooming, groomer stereotypes, types of abuse, consent, exploitation and sexting.

It focuses on practical scenarios that the students need to work through in order to progress with their learning. It should assist teachers with teaching to the top and adding challenge to everyday lessons.

Healthy Lifestyles: This is a series of lessons which looks at how we can keep ourselves healthy. It looks at physical, mental and social health. It also looks at the stigma around mental health and looks in detail at four areas of mental ill health; Depression, Anxiety,

Self harm and Eating disorders:

Healthy Eating: This works alongside the healthy lifestyle lessons, but looks into the nutritional side of being healthy. Diet, the Eatwell plate and the quantity of food eaten are taught.

Year 8 Spring Term Programme

Careers: This is a vital year for your child as he/she will choose their options March. At school we aim to help you and your child secure positive option choices through various ways. Your child will have various assemblies, delivered by subject leaders, describing their GCSE courses in detail. Furthermore they will take part in the Job Taster event in February 2020, where students will get to interact with people from various jobs or careers. They will gather information on various careers, with the emphasis being on how skills and qualities can span across various career choices. There is also the Options information evening in March 2020 where you and your child can talk with subject leaders prior to making your child’s final choices.

In addition to the above, in CPSHE we will be looking at choosing the right options, researching potential job choices, and exploring further the skills and qualities your child possess and how they may influence careers choice.

Being British: This block of work we explore the four countries of Britain, what it means to be Britsh and explore two different communities living in the UK.

Terrorism, Radicalisation and Extremism: To be able to distinguish between different forms of violence & explain why these are or are not called terrorism. Students are encouraged to recognise the important rights of citizens to peaceful protest, know the difference between right & needs, and how these relate to discrimination & fairness, and identify characteristics of terrorism.

Year 8 Summer Term Programme

Give & Let Live/Euthanasia: This work explores organ and blood donation. The moral dilemmas of doctors on decision making, patient stories and reasons for and against organ donation. It also looks at the morality of euthanasia and explores different views around this sensitive topic.

Sexuality, Sexual Identity and Homophobia: Students explore sexuality and what it means to different people, how people identify with their preferred sexuality (including being A sexual and bisexuality) and the effects of homophobia.

Year 9 2019-20 Programme

Child Sexual Exploitation: This block of work follows on from the work the students did in Year 8 with Real Love Rocks. It covers topics such as, grooming & exploitation, positive & negative relationship types, abuse, using risky, dangerous or challenging behaviours, consent & abstinence.

Road Safety: The focus for this workshop is risk taking.  Sam Hemus from WCC Road Safety team will deliver this session to our students.

British Values and Challenging Democracy: Students will recap work covered in Year 8 on the British Values. They will then explore different countries who govern their laws differently, even though both democracies & be able to give examples of when citizens question the outcomes of justice.

A Sense of Identity: This block of work explores how we sometimes judge a book by its cover. We challenge stereotyping and recognise the differences in personal identity. We also encourage students to be able to associate conversations with others regarding personal identity with feelings of insecurity & begin to recognise times where your behaviour could affect someone.

Body Image Blues: Following on from the work on identity, we explore how the media (including social media) can have positive & negative impact on our own body image. We critically analyse whether the messages the media portray are morally justified.

Careers: Students will continue to use Career Menu, our online careers education programme, to discover information about potential career opportunities.

Year 10 2019-20 Programme

Careers: To include the Work Experience launch in October. This work will be based around students finding out about which job sectors interest them, what their skills and qualities are and creating a CV and personal statement to help them find an appropriate work experience placement. Students will continue to explore job sectors, investigate Labour market information, begin action planning and decision making on future career options and options for Post 16 education and training.

Alcohol: We look at the risks of alcohol, looking in particular at the consequences of drinking on yourself and others. Students will know how the number of units of alcohol you consume can affect your body, the consequences of binge drinking and alcohol poisoning.  Students will take part in an activity using beer goggles, which simulates driving while under the influence. Finally students will look at how alcohol can impact on your health and well-being (relationships, health, livelihood and the law).

Road Safety Talks: As our students are near to reaching the legal driving limit, WCC funds specialist road safety sessions targeted at our students. These are an hour long and are provided by Sam Hemus.

Relationships: These lessons continue to look at the topic of healthy and unhealthy relationships. It also investigates abstinence and consent. Contraception and STIs are also looked at in depth.

Four Carrier Bags: Following the lessons on relationships, these lessons look at the pressures of becoming a young parent. Students will investigate the emotional and financial issues related to teen pregnancy.

Pornography: Again, linked to the work on positive relationships, students will investigate how pornography can influence perceptions about sexual activity, expectations, abuse and gender

Practice Interviews: Year 10 will all have the opportunity to have a practice interview with a member of the public from the local business community. Students are encouraged to apply for a job which interests them and then have a 30-minute interview. Feedback is given verbally straight after the interview and also in written form.

Extremism/Terrorism/Radicalisation: Students will explore the factors which contribute to extremist ideologies and behaviours and learn how we can support each other to tackle extremism. Students will be able to explain what is meant by the terms extremism, terrorism and radicalisation, suggest factors which contribute to the formation of extremist ideologies and list several ways people can reduce the risks associated with extremism in their communities.

Year 11 2019-20 Programme

Revision: This is a programme of four sessions which looks at revision techniques, stress reduction, the importance of good nutrition, timetabling revision and understanding exams.

Road safety: As our students are near to reaching the legal driving limit, WCC funds specialist road safety sessions targeted at our students.

Friday Night Shirt: This is a series of lessons based on domestic violence.

Careers: Work in this area will be focused on Year 11’s next steps. They will complete of a personal statement and CV in preparation for sixth form applications, apprenticeships or jobs. We will be using a new careers system called Career Menu to assist our students to make the right choices. They will also have a 1:1 interview with a careers advisor about their future choices. 

Exploitation Issues (Human Trafficking, FGM, Animal Rights and Forced Marriage): Various current exploitation issues will be discussed. Some of these are of a sensitive nature.
